How TFSA Contribution Room Is Calculated
A Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) lets any Canadian resident 18 or older contribute after-tax money that grows and can be withdrawn completely tax-free. Your contribution room accumulates every year you're eligible, starting from 2009 (when the TFSA was introduced) or the year you turned 18 and became a resident, whichever is later — even if you never open an account.
2026 Annual Limit = $7,000 | Full Cumulative Room Since 2009 = $109,000
Room Accumulates Even Without an Account
Unlike many registered accounts, TFSA room builds up automatically every year you're an eligible adult resident, whether or not you've ever opened a TFSA or filed a tax return. This is why someone opening their first TFSA in 2026, having been eligible since 2009, can immediately contribute the full $109,000 cumulative amount.
Withdrawals Add Room Back — Next Year
Any amount you withdraw from a TFSA is added back to your contribution room, but not until January 1 of the following calendar year, not immediately. Re-contributing in the same year you withdrew (before your room is restored) can trigger an over-contribution penalty.
