How the German Statutory Pension Is Calculated
Germany's statutory pension (gesetzliche Rente) doesn't pay out a percentage of your final salary the way some countries' systems do. Instead, every year you work and pay into the system, you earn Entgeltpunkte (pension points) based on how your income compares to the national average salary for that year. At retirement, your total accumulated points are multiplied by the current Rentenwert (pension point value) to determine your monthly pension.
Monthly Pension = Total Entgeltpunkte × Rentenwert
What the Numbers Mean
Earning exactly the national average salary in a given year earns you exactly 1.0 Entgeltpunkt for that year. Earn twice the average, and you earn 2.0 points; earn half the average, and you earn 0.5 points (income above the contribution ceiling doesn't earn additional points). The 2026 Durchschnittsentgelt is €51,944, and the Rentenwert (as of July 2026) is €42.52 per point per month.
This Is a Simplified Estimate
Your real pension statement (Renteninformation) accounts for your actual salary in every individual year of your career, not a single flat average, along with periods of unemployment, parental leave, and other special circumstances that can add or adjust points. This calculator assumes your entered salary applied consistently across all your contribution years, which is a reasonable approximation for a quick estimate but won't exactly match your official Renteninformation from Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
