How the GST Calculator Works

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is India's unified indirect tax, currently applied in four main slabs after the September 2025 "GST 2.0" reform: 0% (essentials like books and fresh produce), 5% (daily-use items), 18% (the standard rate for most goods and services), and 40% (luxury and "sin" goods like tobacco and high-end vehicles).

Adding GST: GST Amount = Base Amount × Rate/100; Total = Base + GST
Removing GST: GST Amount = Inclusive Amount × Rate/(100+Rate); Base = Inclusive − GST
Intra-State: CGST = SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2  |  Inter-State: IGST = full GST Amount

CGST, SGST, and IGST Explained

For a sale within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally between the Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST), each collected by the respective government. For a sale between two different states (inter-state), the full amount is collected as Integrated GST (IGST) by the central government and later apportioned to the destination state.

How This Differs From a Generic VAT Calculator

Unlike a plain VAT calculator that only computes a single tax amount, this GST calculator reflects India's dual-tax structure by splitting the GST into CGST+SGST (for intra-state transactions) or showing it as IGST (for inter-state transactions) — a distinction required on every Indian GST invoice.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current GST slabs in India?
After the September 2025 โ€œGST 2.0โ€ reform, India uses four main slabs: 0% (essentials), 5% (daily-use items), 18% (the standard rate for most goods and services), and 40% (luxury and sin goods like tobacco, pan masala, and high-performance vehicles).
What's the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
CGST and SGST apply together on intra-state sales (within the same state), splitting the GST rate equally between the central and state governments. IGST applies as a single combined rate on inter-state sales (between two different states) and is collected by the central government.
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Use the โ€œRemove GSTโ€ option: Base Amount = Inclusive Amount รท (1 + Rate/100). For example, removing 18% GST from a โ‚น1,180 inclusive price gives a base amount of โ‚น1,000.
Why is this different from the site's VAT Calculator?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is used in many countries outside India as a single-rate tax. India's GST is legally structured as a dual tax requiring a CGST+SGST split for in-state sales or an IGST amount for inter-state sales โ€” a distinction this calculator handles that a generic VAT calculator does not.
Who needs to charge IGST instead of CGST+SGST?
A business must charge IGST when the place of supply (typically the buyer's location) is in a different state from the seller's registered state. If both parties are in the same state, CGST+SGST applies instead.
