How the Walking Calorie Burn Calculator Works
This calculator uses the same MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) based methodology as our Running Calorie Burn Calculator, but with MET values specific to level-ground walking at different paces, drawn from the widely referenced Compendium of Physical Activities. Since walking speed has a large effect on exercise intensity, the calculator interpolates between published pace/MET data points rather than using a single flat value for all walking.

Why Walking Pace Matters So Much for Calorie Burn
Notice how sharply the MET value climbs between 4.0 mph (MET 5.0) and 5.0 mph (MET 8.3) — walking intensity increases non-linearly as pace picks up, because faster walking requires disproportionately more effort to maintain proper walking form (as opposed to breaking into a jog). This calculator linearly interpolates between the published data points for any pace you enter between 2.0 and 5.0 mph, giving a smoother, more accurate estimate than rounding to the nearest table value.
Walking vs. Running Calories: Where's the Line?
At paces around 5.0 mph and above, most people naturally transition from a fast walk into a jog, since walking becomes biomechanically inefficient at higher speeds. This calculator caps its walking-specific MET table at 5.0 mph and flags this transition explicitly — if you're regularly moving faster than that, our Running Calorie Burn Calculator uses running-specific MET values that better reflect that different movement pattern and its distinct energy cost.
