How Long Division Works
Long division is the standard method for dividing one whole number (the dividend) by another (the divisor) one digit at a time, producing a quotient and a remainder. Why the Remainder Matters
Unless a number divides evenly, long division always ends with a remainder smaller than the divisor. That remainder represents the leftover amount that couldn't be split evenly — you can leave it as a whole-number remainder, or continue the division into decimal places by adding a decimal point and bringing down zeros, depending on what the problem calls for.
